Name:  Max

Diagnosis:  Anaplastic Astrocytoma

Home state:  Florida

When Max was 9 years old, his doctor discovered he had a brain tumor called anaplastic astrocytoma. His parents, Sam and Amy, took him to numerous hospitals in Daytona Beach, Fla., but were discouraged by the doctors’ prognoses. “The doctors basically told us Max was going to die and there was nothing they could do,” says Sam.

The Willis’ took Max to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® as a last option. What they found there amazes them still today. They found hope, where there was none before.

“I am in awe of what the doctors and nurses do here,” Sam says. “They are so courageous and will do anything to save a child’s life. These little kids are miracles, and St. Jude helps make these miracles happen everyday.”

At St. Jude, Max has received many types of treatment including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. He is looking forward to spring 2004 when his treatment is scheduled to be completed. Despite what he is going through, Max keeps his spirits high. He enjoys fishing, going to the zoo and playing with all sorts of bugs.
