Name:  Tyson

Diagnosis: ewing sarcoma

Home state:  Mississippi

As a basketball player and karate student, a little leg pain didn’t seem unusual for Tyson. But days later, he was limping and his knee was swelling. An MRI revealed a tumor in Tyson’s leg.

“I couldn’t show my emotions at that moment because Tyson was with me,” recalls his mother Pat. “But when they mentioned possible amputation, I almost lost my breath.”

Thankfully, Tyson’s doctors sent him to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. His treatment consisted of chemotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the tumor and the affected bone. Surgeons then placed an expandable prosthesis in place of the bone. This prosthesis can “grow” as he grows, eliminating the need for additional surgeries.

Doctors have advised Tyson to forgo karate lessons, but he looks forward to taking up golf and horseback riding.
