Name: Briana

Diagnosis: Hodgkin lymphoma

Home state: Mississippi

Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, Briana had just started her chemotherapy regimen in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. The family took refuge in Atlanta, and soon knew going home was not an option.

“Being a new cancer family, we weren’t sure if she could miss a treatment. We were panicking.” her mother Alissa recalled.

As an employee of a Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® radio station, Alissa thought to turn to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® for assistance. She contacted her St. Jude representative who helped get the family St. Jude. Briana started her chemo treatments the next day.

With no medical records in hand, and none accessible from the New Orleans’ hospital, St. Jude doctors had to recreate Briana’s medical history from Alissa’s memory.

“I was an advocate for St. Jude before, but what I have seen them do for us has been unbelievable,” said Alissa.
